Virtual Tour of the Crane Homestead The southern end of the Parlor, here decorated for Christmas, is furnished with a Crane family sofa (with horsehair stuffing), a display of family pictures, and an early 1900's oil painting by Caldwell pharmacist William Hassler Originally two rooms with two fireplaces, the Crane family modified the house in the 1930's. The dividing wall and two fireplaces were removed to make one room, with one fireplace surrounded by windows. The north end of the parlor features period furniture, a plantation desk, Victorian corner shelves and a display of Caldwell's War of 1812 2nd Regiment, NJ Militia Cavalry unit flag. The antique piano is flanked by oil paintings of Mary (Harrison) Crane (1813-1889) and her husband Zenas C. Crane (1804-1883). The family was living in the original farmhouse when it burned down in 1848. Zenas replaced the farmhouse with the three story dwelling, completed in 1852. Portraits of George Edwin Waring (1796-1865) and his wife Sarah Baker (Burger) Waring (1796-1869) were created by artist Harriet Elizabeth Chaney (1838-1913). These portraits hung in the Caldwell, NJ home of their grandson, Junnius Van Vecten Waring (1862-1952), advertising executive and author who was also active on the Caldwell Board of Trade. The built in china cabinet on the left is next to a door that leads the kitchen. Straight ahead are windows overlooking the driveway. The mantle is original to the house, but is for display only as the fireplace was removed in the 1930's.
